How to Make the Most of Your College Visit (Virtual & In-Person)Written by Courtney Wilson
Why College Visits Matter More Than You Think
College visits are more than photo opportunities and campus tours — they are decision-making tools.
Whether you’re walking across campus or logging into a virtual session, a college visit helps you evaluate three key things:
Academic fit
Social environment
Overall support system
A strong visit can clarify your top choice. A weak visit can save you from making the wrong decision.
Here’s how to approach every college visit strategically.
1. Prepare Before You Arrive (or Log In)
The biggest mistake students make? Showing up unprepared.
Before your visit, research:
Academic programs and majors
Class sizes and teaching style
Campus culture and student life
Career outcomes and internships
Write down 3–5 specific questions. When you ask thoughtful questions, you gain better insight — and you stand out.
2. Evaluate the Academic Environment
During your visit, focus on what truly impacts your experience:
Are classes lecture-based or discussion-driven?
Do students seem engaged?
Is faculty interaction emphasized?
What academic support services are available?
Remember: you’re choosing a learning environment, not just a location.
3. Observe the Campus Culture
Beyond academics, pay attention to the energy of the campus.
Ask yourself:
Where do students spend their time?
Do students seem connected and involved?
Is the environment collaborative or competitive?
Can I realistically see myself here for four years?
Your comfort matters.
4. Maximize Virtual Visits
Virtual visits can be just as informative — if you engage intentionally.
Turn your camera on when possible
Ask questions in the chat
Attend live information sessions
Connect with student ambassadors
Follow up with admissions counselors if needed
Engagement creates opportunity.
5. Watch for Red Flags
Not every visit will feel right — and that’s okay.
Be mindful if:
Questions are avoided or answered vaguely
Student life feels disconnected
Academic support isn’t clearly explained
Outcomes and career data aren’t transparent
Clarity matters. Transparency matters.
6. Reflect Immediately After Each Visit
Before you forget details, rate the school on:
Academic fit
Social fit
Financial fit
Support systems
Taking structured notes helps you compare schools objectively later.
