FAFSA can feel intimidating, especially for first-time families, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right steps, you can complete your FAFSA confidently and avoid the delays that slow down financial aid.

Step 1: Create Your FSA IDs

Both the student and the parent need an FSA ID. This is your digital signature and your access to everything FAFSA-related.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

Before you start, have these ready:

Social Security numbers
Parent and student tax information
Bank statements
A list of colleges you plan to apply to

Being prepared saves time and prevents errors.

Step 3: Complete the FAFSA Online
